Although the area was first settled in 1731 by the French who built a small stone fort at Chimney Point, the town of Addison was officially founded in 1761. Geographically, the town is mostly level, gradually sloping towards the lake in some places. The extreme eastern part becomes hilly with the highest elevation being Snake Mountain (or Grandview Mountain, as it is now called; this elevation rises to a height of 1,310 feet above sea level, and is the highest point in the county west of the Green Mountains).
Addison’s population was 1,393 at the 2000 census.
